How it works

How do you convert an image to SVG?

    Start from the largest copy you have

    Hunt down the biggest version of the mark before you upload — a print PDF export, an app icon, a header image at 2x. Every edge in the output is fitted to a pixel boundary in the source, so resolution is the one input you cannot make up later.

    Set the palette to the brand, not the file

    Count the colors the logo actually uses and add one for the background. Most marks land between 4 and 8. A tight palette is also what flattens the compression noise a JPG logo has picked up along its edges.

Why convert a logo to SVG?

A logo is the one asset that has to work at every size a business ever uses: a 16-pixel favicon, a business card, a trade-show banner, an embroidered shirt. A raster logo cannot do that. It is fixed to the pixel grid it was exported at, so it either goes soft when enlarged or forces you to maintain a folder of exports at every size you might need.

SVG solves that with one file. It also does two things a PNG never can: the paths stay editable, so a designer can recolor or adjust the mark years later without redrawing it, and print suppliers can accept it directly instead of asking for "the vector file" you no longer have.

Tracing is what gets you there, and its limits are worth knowing before you start. Lettering is traced into outlines, not into live text — the shapes are editable, but you cannot retype them or change the typeface. Colors are sampled from the pixels, so they land close to your brand values rather than exactly on them; check them against the brand guide and correct the fills afterwards if the match matters. And nothing recovers detail the source never held: a 200-pixel-wide logo produces softer curves than a 1000-pixel one, no matter which settings you choose.

The practical upshot is that the source file decides most of the result. Find the largest, cleanest copy of the mark, keep the color count near the number of colors the design genuinely uses, and the traced output will usually be close enough to hand off.
