BMP basics

What is the bitmap file format?

BMP stands for Bitmap, a two-dimensional image file format based on raster storage, and is also one of the standard image formats for the Windows operating system.

BMP supports rich color depths, ranging from 1-bit monochrome (2 colors), 4-bit (16 colors), 8-bit (256 colors), 16-bit (high color), to 24-bit (true color, approximately 16.7 million colors). The 32-bit BMP adds an 8-bit Alpha transparency channel on top of 24-bit true color to precisely control the transparency of the image.

Although early BMP supported the use of RLE lossless compression in low color depth modes, the vast majority of BMP files are stored uncompressed, resulting in high fidelity, easy readability, and large file sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Questions About Bitmap to SVG Conversion

Can a BMP file be converted to a real vector SVG?

Yes. The converter traces the colors, edges, and shapes in your BMP into editable SVG paths instead of simply placing the original bitmap inside an SVG file.

Which bitmap images produce the best SVG results?

Logos, icons, line art, flat illustrations, and other images with clear edges and a limited color palette usually produce the cleanest vectors. Photographs, gradients, noise, and very small details may require more cleanup.

Will the SVG stay sharp when resized?

Yes. The traced SVG is built from vector paths, so it can be enlarged or reduced without becoming pixelated. The accuracy of those paths still depends on the clarity and resolution of the source bitmap.

Does bitmap to SVG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparent areas in a supported BMP can be carried into the SVG, although results depend on how transparency is stored in the source file. You can preview the converted image and adjust its background before downloading.

Can I convert multiple BMP files at once?

Yes. You can upload and convert up to 50 BMP images in one batch, with each file limited to 25 MB.

Is the bitmap to SVG converter free?

Each account includes three free bitmap-to-SVG conversions. After those are used, each successful conversion uses one credit.

Can I edit the SVG after conversion?

Yes. The downloaded SVG can be opened in compatible vector design software, where you can adjust its paths, colors, size, and other elements.
