HEIC basics
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is an image storage format developed by Apple based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard and HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) technology. It evolved from the HEIF standard established by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
Starting with the iOS 11 update in 2017, HEIC has been set as the default photo storage format for the iPhone 7 and subsequent models.
While maintaining the same image quality, HEIC reduces file size by approximately 50% compared to JPEG, achieves about 50% size savings compared to WebP, and saves roughly 10% in file size compared to AVIF (at fast encoding presets). Technically, it supports 10-bit and 16-bit color depths, transparency channels, depth maps, and other metadata, while also offering the ability to store multiple image sequences within a single file.
As technology has advanced, certain Windows versions (such as Windows 10 RS4 and later updates) have added support for the HEIC format natively or via extensions.
Additionally, professional software such as Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, along with various third-party cloud storage and image management tools, now support HEIC. However, compatibility limitations still persist with older operating systems and legacy image editing software.
| Attribute | HEIC | SVG |
|---|---|---|
| Data Model | Raster / Bitmap (pixel grid-based) | Vector (XML paths and shape instructions) |
| Format Standard | MPEG ISO/IEC 23008-12 (HEIF container) | W3C SVG 1.1 / SVG 2 |
| Apple Default Status | Default photo format since iOS 11 (2017) | Not a system photo default (widely used for Web & UI) |
| Compression Method | HEVC intra-frame lossy/lossless compression (H.265) | XML text compression (further compressible via Gzip / Brotli) |
| Scaling Performance | Pixelation and blurriness occur when enlarged | Infinite scaling; remains perfectly sharp at any magnification |
| Color & Rendering | Supports up to 16 bits per channel and wide color gamut (P3) | Based on CSS/XML color standards; supports solid colors, gradients, and filters |
| Best Use Cases | Photos, natural landscapes, screenshots, HDR images | Logos, vector icons, line art, illustrations, flowcharts |
| Browser Support | Native in Safari 17+; Chrome/Firefox require JS decoding | Natively supported across all modern browsers |
| Editability | Pixel-level editing only (e.g., Photoshop retouching) | Path and node editing supported (e.g., Illustrator, Figma) |
| Typical File Size (Simple Graphic) | ~80–200 KB (fixed codec overhead) | ~5–50 KB (extremely lightweight) |
| Typical File Size (Complex Photo) | ~1–5 MB (high compression ratio) | Extremely bloated (tens of MBs+); unsuitable for complex photos |
HEIC to SVG conversion
HEIC to SVG conversion is the process of converting HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) raster images—commonly used on devices like iPhones—into SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) vector files.
This process typically involves one of two implementation methods: vectorizing the raster shapes into infinitely scalable paths, or directly embedding the raster image within an SVG wrapper for seamless integration into vector-compatible workflows.
Go from an uploaded HEIC image to a crisp, scalable vector file - no professional design experience required.
Drag and drop or select HEIC files from your device. Convert a single image or upload multiple images for batch processing.
Once uploaded, AI automatically analyzes the image, identifying edges, colors, contours, and shapes to generate optimized SVG vector paths.
When the conversion is complete, preview and download your SVG instantly. You can also export the result as PNG, JPG, WEBP, or other common formats.
FAQ
Upload your HEIC file to our tool, and the conversion engine will transform the photo's pixels into scalable SVG vector paths using image tracing technology.
SVG is a vector format that simplifies images into colored shapes. Our conversion engine performs smart optimization during the process to ensure the generated SVG output maintains high visual quality.
Absolutely. You can quickly capture a sketch or logo with your iPhone, convert it into vector paths with one click, and import it directly into Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape for editing.
Yes. While the conversion simplifies the color palette to generate clean vector paths, our tool works to accurately reproduce the original colors of the HEIC image as closely as possible.
HEIC uses advanced HEVC intra-frame compression to store pixel data efficiently. In contrast, SVG describes shapes using text—spelling out every path coordinate, color, and curve handle in XML code. For complex photos, the XML code can easily reach millions of characters. To reduce the file size, you can choose a simpler source image, decrease the precision slider in the tool, or directly convert the HEIC to PNG if you only need a raster image.
