How to vectorize a logo.

A logo that only exists as a small JPG can be traced back into editable vector paths. Here is how to prepare the source, choose settings that suit flat artwork, and clean up the result afterwards.

Start with the best source available

Vectorizing a logo means rebuilding pixel regions as editable paths. The larger and cleaner the source, the smoother those paths can be. Before tracing, check brand folders, press kits, old design exports, and app icon files for a vector original or a high-resolution PNG.

Do not upscale a tiny logo before tracing. Upscaling creates more pixels without restoring missing detail, and its softened edges can make the traced result less accurate.

  • Prefer a lossless PNG over a JPEG of the same dimensions.
  • Aim for at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side when possible.
  • Crop away whitespace and remove unrelated backgrounds before tracing.

Choose settings for flat artwork

Most logos contain a small number of solid colors and clear boundaries. Start with the number of visible colors plus one for the background, and use a simple or standard tracing mode. A low palette also merges JPEG compression noise into flatter regions.

Increase the color count only when a real gradient, shadow, or tonal detail disappears. Extra colors often describe antialiasing and noise rather than useful design detail.

Inspect and clean the paths

Review the result at high zoom. Look for ripples on straight edges, rounded corners that should be sharp, isolated color specks, and inaccurate brand colors. These are easier to miss in a thumbnail.

Finish the file in a vector editor by replacing sampled colors with official brand values, deleting the traced background, merging fragments, and correcting geometric shapes. Traced lettering becomes outlines; recreate it with the original typeface if it must remain editable.

Know when to redraw

Automatic tracing works best for flat artwork with clear edges. If the only source is extremely small, photographic, heavily textured, or dominated by complex gradients, manually redrawing the mark may be faster and produce a cleaner brand asset.

Can you vectorize a logo automatically?

Yes, for most flat logos. Automatic tracing groups neighbouring pixels of similar color into filled regions and fits outlines around them, which suits the flat areas and hard edges a logo already has. What tracing cannot do is invent detail the source never had, so a 200-pixel-wide logo produces softer curves than a 1000-pixel one.

What resolution should the source logo be?

As large as you can find. Aim for at least 1000 pixels on the longest side. Every edge in the output is fitted to the pixel boundary in the source, so more pixels along each edge means a smoother, more faithful curve. Upscaling a small logo before tracing does not help: it adds pixels but no new information.

How many colors should I use for a logo?

Start with the number of colors the logo actually uses, plus one for the background. Most brand marks are 2 to 6 colors. Only raise the count if a gradient or a soft shadow is part of the design.

Why does my traced logo have jagged or wobbly edges?

Almost always a source problem rather than a settings problem. JPEG compression leaves blocky artifacts along high-contrast edges, and tracing faithfully follows them. Lowering the color count merges that noise into flat tones; starting from a larger or lossless copy of the logo fixes it properly.

Will the text in my logo become editable text?

Is a traced logo good enough for print?
